Creating a Plan After Outpatient Rehab

Your recovery doesn’t end after outpatient. Adjusting to life after rehab and outpatient can be challenging and requires constant work. Creating a post-treatment plan can help offer you structure and goals to maintain your sobriety to make this transition easier.

Tips for Creating a Post-Treatment Plan

Post-treatment planning is an important aspect of recovery. Post-treatment aftercare helps you transition back into regular life while maintaining and safeguarding your sobriety. Here are some tips for creating a sustainable post-treatment plan:

  1. Stay engaged with your recovery

Do some research and find out what recovery programs best fit you. If you create an aftercare plan that is not of interest to you, you will struggle to keep it up long-term. Think back to what forms of support you found the most helpful during treatment, such as individual therapy sessions or group meetings, and implement that support into your post-treatment plan. Making sure to incorporate structure in your post-treatment plan is also essential in staying engaged. If your aftercare plan is not concrete or scheduled out, it is more likely that you will not follow through. Ensuring your continued engagement should be one of your main objectives when creating your post-treatment plan.

  1. Continue to take care of your mental health

Mental health and addiction are interconnected, so letting your mental health slip also likely means letting your sobriety slip. Maintaining your mental health and being sure to incorporate mental health support in your aftercare plan is integral. There is no one way to take care of your mental health, so try out different mental health services such as therapy, twelve-step meetings, and support groups to discover what works best for you. Making mental health a priority will make your post-treatment plan more effective.

  1. Keep up with your daily responsibilities

Keeping up with small, but necessary, daily activities and responsibility is an important part of ensuring your aftercare plan is sustainable. If you are not taking care of yourself and the responsibilities you have as an adult, then it will be difficult to keep up with your recovery. To do this, make a list of the responsibilities that need to be fully integrated into your life. These activities may be opening a bank account, looking for a better living situation, or securing a job.

  1. Make a relapse prevention plan

Relapsing is not uncommon, especially in early recovery, however, you should have a plan in place to minimize your risk of relapse. Making the transition from rehab or outpatient back into regular life can be triggering, thus making a relapse prevention plan very important. By figuring out your triggers, you can begin to work on ways to limit your exposure to them as well as learning how to cope with them. It is unreasonable to avoid all triggers, so your relapse prevention plan should help you manage them.

  1. Prioritize your health

Becoming and staying sober can be physically and mentally exhausting. Your post-treatment plan should prioritize rebuilding and maintaining your strength and health after leaving treatment. Taking simple steps, such as eating nutritious meals, getting a full night’s sleep, and exercising, can have a huge impact on your overall mood and recovery. Make sure to include some daily activities you can implement to make sure you are staying healthy and energized. If you are unhappy and lethargic, it will be difficult to keep up with your post-treatment plan.

  1. Develop positive friendships

Re-entering society after rehab or outpatient is the perfect time to cut out people who do not support you and make room for new, positive friends. It can be extremely detrimental to your sobriety to continue hanging out with friends that contributed to your substance use. One of the best ways to maintain your sobriety is by making supportive friends that bring out the best in you. This can be done through different events and meetings in the recovery community, social media, and more. By developing positive and meaningful friendships, your recovery journey will not be a lonely one.

  1. Set goals for yourself

Setting goals is a good way to motivate yourself to continue your post-treatment plan. Some days it may be difficult to follow through with your daily activities, so setting small goals for you to reach each day or week can offer you a sense of meaning and accomplishment. When creating your post-treatment plan, be sure to include possible steps to achieve bigger goals so they feel less daunting and more manageable.

These are a few tips you can consider while creating your aftercare plan that will hopefully make the process a little easier. Remember, each person’s post-treatment plan is unique, so be sure not to compare your post-treatment plan to someone else’s.
