Introduction
“What are your goals in life?” is a question that you might have heard often. In fact, as soon as the question is posed, you might already see a few goals floating in front of your eyes. Not a surprise either, as this success-driven world encourages us to have goals and chase those goals.
Chasing goals is not merely checking boxes. One achievement after another. It requires what is known as “goal setting.” In this blog, we shall explore how you can set goals for success, and how goal setting will turn your visions, your dreams into tangible reality.
What is Goal Setting?
Goal setting is defined as setting specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound objectives you want to achieve. In short, these are known as S.M.A.R.T. goals. It also simply does not stop at setting these objectives, but identifying their outcomes and planning to achieve them.
Goal setting is a motivational tool, it allows you to stay focused on your goal, put your efforts toward it, track your success, take detours wherever necessary, and achieve whatever you set out to achieve. More than a tool, it is also a frame of mind that increases responsibility, takes control of your life, and directs it to where you want it to go.
What Strategies Help You Set Goals You Can Stick With?
S.M.A.R.T. goals sound easy to craft, however, once they are set, they also need to be followed. It is easy to lose focus and veer away in a different direction. There are only 24 hours in a day, and different things compete for your attention. So, there are some strategies you can follow to help you stick to the goals you set.
Prioritize one goal – Having a singular focus is very important. That is, it is easy to flit from one goal to the next, especially if they are competing with one another. Prioritize one goal, and set the other ones aside for later. This way, you can track real progress.
Goal chaining – This is interesting and makes sticking to goals quite easy. The thing is, if you chain your goals with habits that already exist, it makes it easier for you to follow through with your goals.
Set an upper limit – Now, mostly with goals, we tend to set lower limits. For instance, thinking about losing at least 1 pound a week is the lower limit. But setting an upper limit, say, not more than 2 pounds also helps goals seem more achievable. In cases such as weight loss, it is also healthy in that it stops from going overboard.
Create a conducive environment – Having an environment aligned with goals helps in getting into a goal-oriented frame of mind and sticking to the goals you have set. For instance, if you want to cut down on drinking or smoking, then having alcohol or cigarettes lying around the house is not exactly conducive to your goal as it creates a desire to reach out and just have that one drink or one smoke more. If you remove them from your vicinity, it makes it difficult for you to attain them and over time curbs the desire as well.
Track goals – Sticking with goals becomes easy when you are able to track them. It also helps keep your focus on the goals if you know where you are at. For instance, if your goal is to incorporate meditation into your life, make a note of how many minutes you are able to meditate every day and for how many days you are able to do it at a stretch. This creates a positive mindset and stay on track.
The Benefits of Setting Goals
Goals are driving factors in life. We all have goals in life. However, achieving goals requires goal setting.
Goal setting is a powerful tool. It drives you toward achieving your goals and motivates you to develop strategies for achieving your goals. Moreover, goal setting simply does not serve as a motivation, it affects behavior and lifestyle as well.
Moreover, when goals are achieved, it increases your self-esteem, self-efficacy, and life satisfaction as well.
How to Set Yourself Up for Consistent Goal Achievement?
Despite setting goals, very few actually achieve goals in life. This is because of the lack of consistency in goal setting and achievement. Therefore, the trick here is to set yourself up for consistent goal achievement. Some of the steps you can take toward the same are:
-
Have a clear vision that directs you to take consistent action. This requires having S.M.A.R.T. goals and a developed plan to achieve them.
-
Goals must be long-term, and review these goals consistently. For instance, a monthly review gives you enough time to follow goals and track progress.
-
Avoid trying to look for instant gratification, as this takes the focus away from long-term planning and success.
-
Have a positive mindset, focus on progress, celebrate wins, and adjust plans wherever required.
-
If you miss out in some way, afford some grace to yourself.
The Complete Goal Setting Process with Examples for Success
Goal setting requires goal planning, which means going about achieving your goals in a methodical manner.
1. The first step is to visualize the desired outcome. This requires setting S.M.A.R.T. goals, like “I shall lose between 4 – 8 pounds in a month.”
2. The second step is to create an action plan. For this, you need to break goals into manageable steps. For instance, if you want to adopt a healthier lifestyle, then you can begin by improving nutrition, tracking the amount of water you drink every day, setting up a workout routine, establishing a sleep routine, and tracking progress.
3. The third step is to set deadlines. In every step that you take towards your goal, you need to set a deadline. For instance, if you are going to prepare for a marathon to be held on January 30th, then set a deadline for every step taken. Create a training schedule by October 15th, run a long-distance test by November 5th, complete a half-marathon as a practice run by December 15th, finalize gear by January 10th, and participate in a taper week held 2 – 4 weeks before the marathon event to be held on January 30th.
4. The fourth step is to analyze the resources you have and the ones you need. For instance, you can think of the skill set you need to achieve a goal. If not, what can you do to develop the skill set, and who can help you with that?
5. The fifth step is to implement the plan. This is the action step and the culmination of all you have planned so far. To stick to the goals you have set, it is good to create a reward system to keep you motivated. For instance, as planned, if you lose between 4 – 8 pounds in a month, then treat yourself to a favorite movie.
6. The final step is to monitor the progress. Track how far you have come in terms of achieving your goal, whether you have adhered to the timeline, and if you have met the objectives. Be open to feedback, build on your strengths, and focus on the areas where you need improvement.
Overcoming Obstacles in Goal Setting
Goal setting can be transformative, however, it does not come without its challenges. With goals and setting goals, obstacles are part and parcel of the same. However, they can be overcome as well.
-
The first thing to do is identify what your obstacles are. Recognize them and acknowledge them. Introspection and seeking feedback are some ways of identifying these obstacles.
-
The next thing to do is change the way you approach obstacles. For this, it is important to become self-aware, acknowledge your shortcomings, challenge negative thinking, and develop a learning mindset.
-
Develop a plan to overcome obstacles. In the same manner as you would set goals, define them, break them down into manageable steps, prioritize these steps, and set deadlines.
-
Have a good support system around you and reach out to them when needed. Obstacles can become cumbersome and deplete motivation, and this is when you need to reach out to your trusted near and dear. They can provide you with encouragement, motivation, and even solutions to overcome these problems
The Role of Accountability in Achieving Goals
With setting goals, it is not just simply putting pen to paper and jotting them down. It requires drive and action, sure, but more than everything, it requires accountability. For this, you need to take ownership of these goals and acknowledge that you are in control of them.
Accountability enables you to take responsibility for the actions you perform, the decisions you take, and the outcomes you achieve. It requires honesty with your goals and with yourself. Taking accountability helps in being motivated to perform, and finally, when your goals are within your grasp, it leads to increased satisfaction.
